Public Relations & Marketing - Everything we do is about one thing: Measurable Results

UK directors are wasting money on leadership courses

Professor Ford based her comments on a number of her research projects into leadership styles and their impact on business performance. She has interviewed around 200 business owners, directors and senior managers from businesses large and small and public sector organisations.

Jackie said: I've interviewed hundreds of senior managers who have recently been on some kind of management development programme.

It is hard to believe how many are left dissatisfied by these. Typical comments are that the theory about good leaders - listening to your employees, encouraging new ideas, involving people across the board when implementing new initiatives is considerably at odds with what their own bosses do in reality.

For some, learning about how really good companies operate can be so disheartening, the manager eventually leaves and looks for a better place to work. Others find their ideas blocked and end up abandoning what they learnt.

The critical ingredient to make leadership courses work, adds Ford, is to give managers the skills to influence and change their own bosses. That will make these courses far better value for money and help improve business performance.

The School of Management has launched a CIPD accredited part-time MSc on HRM specifically targeted to current or aspiring HR practitioners.

Prof Ford's masterclass is one of a series of free breakfast briefings run most months.
