Public Relations & Marketing - Everything we do is about one thing: Measurable Results

Success on Tour means business at Fera

Richard Gregory, chair of Yorkshire Innovation, Yorkshire Bank and Science City York hosts the second in a series of short, early morning sessions aimed at helping businesses learn to do something new in an affordable way. He describes Fera as "one of Yorkshire's jewels - a modern government research facility of international reputation with a successful track record of working with companies and huge potential to do more."

The visit looks at how to achieve business success whilst also allowing scientists freedom to innovate. Speakers include: Fera's head of innovation, the CEOs of two spin out companies, Forsite Diagnostics and Chamelic and managing director of the Viking Fund, Andrew Burton.

The Viking Fund specialises in financing early stage technology companies. At the event managing director Andrew Burton will explain the fundamentals for businesses looking to commercialise a new product or service.

"No matter how clever your innovation, if you want funding, you have to demonstrate a big enough market to make it financially worthwhile and how you will protect it.

"Funders will also want confidence in the management team, looking for the right mix of commercial skills and understanding of science and technology to fully exploit the potential of the innovation," he said.

There will also be a tour of the laboratory at Sand Hutton, opportunities to ask questions and to meet the scientists working on award winning projects such as the bird detection radar and also techniques for contaminant testing of food, efficacy testing of pesticides and the use of DNA sequencing in plant disease identification.

All Success on Tour events are hosted by Business Ambassadors, chosen by Rosie Winterton, Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber to help other businesses in the region learn from their experience.

I am grateful to The Food and Environment Research Agency for hosting this visit and for sharing their expertise on how best to nurture scientific research and support the development of ideas into commercial products and services.
